Where are guitar lessons held?

Our guitar lessons take place upstairs at 83C Hardy Street, Nelson. You can find a map and directions for Guitar Lessons, Nelson

How much do lessons cost?

Private lessons are priced at $30 per half-hour session, while group lessons are $20 per half-hour session. Fees for the full term must be settled before lessons commence. Payment confirms your booking and secures your spot in the class.

How many lessons are there per term?

Typically, there are 10 lessons per school term, though some classes may vary from 8 to 9 weeks. Enrolment is for the full term. Please note that there are no lessons during school holidays.

Does age and ability matter?

I welcome anyone interested in learning guitar, regardless of age, for private lessons. For group lessons: kids (6-12 years), teens (13-18 years), and adults (19+).

Do I need my own guitar?

Yes, you will need your own guitar for lessons and practice at home.

Where should I buy a guitar?

I suggest visiting a local music shop to find a guitar that suits your preferences and budget. Kids might need a 3/4 size guitar, and I recommend a steel-string guitar for all. Investing in a quality guitar initially can save you from upgrading later. Refer to our Guitar Buying Tips or consider our recommended guitar packages.

Can I stop lessons and get a refund?

Lessons are prepaid for the full term and are non-refundable. Vacant lesson spots would need to be advertised for replacement. Private lesson students may credit one missed lesson per term toward the next term.

Are there lessons during school holidays?

No, lessons are scheduled during school terms only, not during school holidays.

Tutor Bio

Phil has been playing the guitar for over 30 years. He started teaching guitar in 2000 and has been the guitar tutor at Broadgreen Intermediate and Nayland College 2015-2019, and tutoring at the Nelson School of Music 2018-2019.

Phil started learning the guitar when he was 13. He had a keen interest in music during his high school years, performing in bands and writing songs. He then attended NSOM’s Contemporary Music Performance Course for 2 years. Since then he has been performing on a regular basis as a solo artist in bars, at private functions and weddings around Nelson.
